Job Description:

The Senior Coder is responsible for assisting the Supervisor in the daily operations and effectiveness of the coding department, including the quantity and quality of work. Critical responsibilities include:

  • Provides timely and accurate administrative and clinical data through the assignment of current ICD/CPT diagnosis and procedure codes while complying with the regulations and requirements of the Federal Government, State licensing agencies and CTCA’s policies and procedures and acting as subject matter expert.
  • Assists in both formal and informal provider documentation education to achieve a true reflection of the service provided, procedure performed, route and devices used, as appropriate to supports CTCA’s management planning process and ensures appropriate reimbursement for all services provided.
  • Works closely with departments outside of HIM, clinical staff, and physicians.
  • Coordinates quarterly education to coding staff.
  • Responsible for participating in technology upgrades and educating the extended user population. 
  • Assists with claims corrections and denial resolution.
  • Supports CTCA’s management planning process and ensures appropriate reimbursement for all services provided. 

Job Accountabilities

  • Analyze delinquent billing report (DNFB) and coding metrics daily to assign priority coding tasks to meet set department Key performance indicators. 20%
  • Assign accurate ICD/CPT codes to each diagnosis and procedure substantiated by documentation contained in the medical record following departmental and current official ICD coding guidelines to ensure consistent and accurate coding of diagnostic and procedural data. 50%
  • Works closely with Patient Accounts, Bill Assurance and Denials Management departments for resolution of charge issues in a timely manner. 20%
  • Assist in quarterly audits with Supervisor in the development of educational presentations to ensure a 95% coding accuracy rate. Trains new hires as needed. 10%

Education/Experience Level

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required.
  • Completion of a 2-year college or technical school curriculum in Health Information Management, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Completion of a 4-year college curriculum with BS in Health Information Management with a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of related medical coding experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS systems.
  • Knowledge of hospital billing systems for Governmental, managed care and commercial payers.
  • Written and verbal communication ability with all clinicians and their staff professionally, succinctly, and authoritatively.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current ICD10, CPT diagnosis and procedural coding.
  • Previous experience developing and conducting physician or coding educational sessions and formal presentations beneficial.
  • Knowledge of the revenue cycle, charge master, manual coding assignment, encoding software revenue codes, and DNFB management. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Knowledge of cancer specialty medicine coding and reimbursement.
  • Skilled in both oral and written communication.
  • Customer-service oriented, timely in responses to requests for service/information, able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and possess leadership skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Applications with knowledge of Microsoft Excel is preferred.
  • Must be willing to travel, as needed.
