Job Description:

Operating Room (OR) Materials Specialist (Sr Tech, Supply Chain)

This position is responsible for ordering, inventory, and other supply activities to provide timely acquisition of all materials and/or equipment (non-Capital) and /or services for Clinical Procedure area as assigned in accordance with purchasing policies, procedures, and contracts and consistent with our mission, vision, and values.  Achieve the goals and objectives of cost containment, inventory control, receiving and distribution of all supplies.


  • Conducts and coordinates the activities and processes of procurement, receipt, distribution, stocking and inventory management of medical supplies and other materials for the assigned clinical procedure area.  This will also include recall management and product returns.  Interacts with the Finance department to monitor compliance with point of use technology systems.
  • Assists in daily operations, managing daily procurement, charge capture and repair of materials, equipment, and implants in support of Perioperative services
  • Receives requests for special order supplies and procures them for the correct patient, procedure, date, and time. Coordinates with the Clinical department to arrange any special delivery needs from a vendor or other department or facility, if necessary. Verifies that the supply request is within the boundaries of contract management. 
  • Arranges evaluations of new products, including contacting vendor representatives and arranging demonstrations. 
  • Regularly takes and accounts for inventory of all supplies in the assigned areas.  Collaborates with the team to decide the appropriate inventory levels and monitors usage, shelf life and rotates stock to avoid product expiration.  Conducts routine needs analysis and determines the optimal inventory levels for each item.
  • Conducts product comparison substitution and availability. 
  • Tracks and maintains all consignment items.
  • Daily assesses upcoming schedules for procedures and other sources for future supply needs.  Orders specialty items and coordinates the receipt, storage, and delivery of these items. 
  • Promotes and monitors cost containment and encourages conversion to standardization of products and equipment. 
  • Works with vendors, gets quotes and makes recommendations for purchases.  Participates in materials management meetings, as necessary.
  • Oversees and maintains an inventory file and implant log using the available tracking system, software, and designed process.  This work is performed based upon the individual needs and as agreed upon by Perioperative Services and Materials Management.
  • Receives and reviews vendor sales order sheets for specialty supplies and equipment and verifies cost, quantity, usage prior to payment to ensure vendor is paid in a timely manner.  May also provide assistance with requests from Finance to provide pricing support.
  • Uses the Lawson system for ordering, tracking, charging, and usage reporting.  Ensures all open tickets are closed on a daily basis
  • Makes recommendations to management regarding changes to Materials program.  Performs various benefit analysis and research in order to make recommendations to surgical team including physicians. 
  • Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements as well as applicable professional standards.  Provides all customers with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our mission and vision.



  • Must have minimum of 2 yrs. experience in a clinical role in Surgery
  • High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • BLS (American Heart Association) Certification
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to understand and safely handle supplies and equipment.


  • Supply Chain Process:  Strong working knowledge of surgical supplies and equipment and ordering IT platform (Lawson).  Minimum of 1year Medical Supply Chain experience.
